They’ve popped the question. You’ve said yes. So what happens next?
This is probably the biggest moment of your life. A time for celebration and planning for the future, but there are a few key things you must do straight away to ensure that between now and your big day everything goes to plan.
Here are just a few things you need to bear in mind now that you’ve got engaged, so grab a pen and start making that all important “to do” list!
Tell the World
There’s no shame in sharing your great news once you’ve got engaged, in fact, you probably want to shout it from the rooftops but there is something of a protocol to follow here.
Start with the most important people in your life, people like your parents, siblings, and grandparents, either sharing the news in person or giving them a call to tell them your big news.
Then, once your inner circle is up to date, you can head to social media with the perfect engagement post.
Throw a party
It’s not every day that you get engaged so this is the perfect excuse to celebrate with all your friends and family. If it’s a big bash you have in mind then you’ll need to think about the venue, the decor, the food, invitations, a photographer and so on.
But if you are not into big parties, a small get-together at a nearby bar or restaurant can be just as memorable, so whether it’s a big bash or something a little more intimate make sure you look round for a local venue that will be able to cater to all your needs.
Set a Date
After, “Congratulations” and “Let’s see the ring,” the most common question people will now ask you is, “Have you set a date?” So to save you lots of awkward silences and face pulling if you haven’t got a day in mind it’s probably best that the two of you come up with a vague, non-specific answer.
Something like: “We’re hoping for early next year” or “We like the idea of a Christmas wedding.” If nothing else this will make people feel like they are in the loop and buy you time while you make that key decision, while also being a polite way of ensuring your big day is on their mental radar. Just be sure to keep people updated when you finally set that all important date!
Insure the Ring
Let’s face it, nothing can replace the sentimental value of your engagement ring, but if the worst happens, at least you can look for something similar if it’s properly insured.
Check to see if your ring is covered by your household insurance and if not you’ll need to get it covered as soon as possible as it’s not likely you’ll want to put it away in a drawer for safe-keeping anytime soon!
Before you even think about your wedding venue or what kind of wedding ceremony you want it’s probably wise to think numbers. Create a draft list of what family members, friends and work colleagues you’ll be inviting to get an idea of how many guests you’ll have to cater for; this will play a huge role in which wedding venues you might want to take a look at.
Employ a Wedding Planner
It will feel like there are a million things you’ll need to consider after you’ve got engaged and the nearer it gets to the big day this will seem more like two million, that’s why it’s best to employ the services of a wedding planner.
Once you’ve narrowed down the specific dates you have in mind a planner will be able to give you invaluable insight into a range of fantastic ideas and possible venues, and might even be able to suggest something you’d not considered before.
Choose a Venue
Choosing the perfect wedding venue is probably the most important thing on any newly engaged couple’s list and because it plays a vital role in the success of your big day, it’s a decision you really need to get right.
Like viewing a new property it is easy to fall in love with a place without checking that the venue can cater to for all of your exact requirements so it’s vital that you do your homework.
Make sure you consider every little detail including the number of people that can be catered for, the decor, the location, the accommodation, the food, if it has a spa; even how stunning it will look in your photographs in 20 years from now. It’s a huge task but one which you must get right to ensure your wedding day is the most perfect moment of your life!
